When I moved to Atlanta last year, friends and family reacted with silly Southern accents. “Y’all moving to Georgia?” they would playfully ask, imitating the Sugarbakers of 1980s “Designing Women.” The feedback was funny for two reasons: Most of my friends and family members hail from Louisiana, which owns several unique accents, including Southern, and Atlanta is one of the country’s most diverse cities of the world. Yes, you’ll find Southern accents here, but if you travel down Buford Highway in DeKalb County, you’ll likely hear dozens of world accents.

On this Cinco de Mayo, the anniversary of the Mexican forces overtaking their French colonists, it's a day for authentic Mexican cuisine. The word here is authentic! If you’re searching for true Mexican and less of the commercialized fare, take a drive down Buford Highway in Atlanta. According to my friends at Pineapple Public Relations, here are a few places that offer real Mexican cuisine.

The Plaza Fiesta Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be Sunday, May 8, 2022, at one of the largest LatinX shopping malls in Georgia. There will be live mariachi music, bands, games and prizes, not to mention stores selling authentic Latin American apparel and hand-painted tableware.

There’s also the Buford Highway Farmers Market, a 100,000-square-foot grocery megastore. Since 1974, the market has offered a vast variety of exotic produce.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!
